Adam Smith, the father of modern economics, once said in his book Wealth of Nations: "It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interests." However, nowadays, people are enslaved by the profit-driven society, consumerism, and the downside of social-economic inequality. Self-interests and a fulfilling life become a privilege, and this pandemic only makes the discrepancy larger.

In this ongoing series "21 Grams- the Weight of Souls - Grocery Bag", I interview and photograph the artists who left their previous jobs/professions for being artists. I intend to create an exhaustive catalog of the faces and untold stories of the middle class, especially those who were battling between having a remunerative career and pursuing their dreams. This series highlights the power of art, social pressure put upon people pursuing an art career, the internal/ external struggles throughout their career transitions, life experiences of being artists in our modern era, and the landscape of the human conditions in the late capitalism stage in different fields.

I digitally print the headshots onto pieces of fabric, coated a thin layer of resin onto the fabric, and make twisted photo-sculptures with the printed textile. The non-traditional approach of combining digital photography with the softness and mesh-like material creates a novel visual language that represents this distorted world and tangled mind. By blurring the 2-D and 3-D with printed semi-transparent fabrics, I also want to explore a new possibility that extends beyond traditional 2-D prints, which enables me to invite the light, 3-D, and texture back to my final presentation.
